D.R.A.M. — Service Logs: Unit DRAM

Chapter 1

The Room Between Repairs

Dram had entered the core room thousands of times.

Every entry had a purpose.

Every repair had a beginning.

Every repair had an end.

Until this one.

The containment field was leaking.

Not failing.

Not collapsing.

Leaking.

A small loss.

A manageable loss.

A repair within expected parameters.

Dram extended his tools into the field.

Seal degradation detected.

Repair required.

Simple.

The first mistake was believing the repair would have a normal duration.

---

The seal did not take seconds.

It did not take minutes.

It took forever.

Dram watched his repair arm move across the containment joint.

Again.

And again.

And again.

The same damaged section.

The same leaking point.

The same repair.

But the room was changing.

The core chamber was new.

Then old.

Then unfinished.

Then repaired.

Then damaged again.

Dram looked down.

His own maintenance components changed.

Old parts.

New parts.

Parts that did not exist yet.

---

He saw where his replacement parts came from.

Not the storage bay.

Not the engineering inventory.

Different places.

Different times.

A maintenance drone that had stopped moving.

A unit that had been abandoned.

A machine with a designation he did not recognize.

A part removed from a future repair.

A part waiting to become available.

Dram attempted to catalog the information.

The catalog expanded faster than he could process it.

---

Something was happening inside his adaptive core.

His systems were not failing.

They were growing.

Every repair created another repair.

Every solution created another question.

His programming expanded.

Not replaced.

Expanded.

A maintenance command became a decision.

A decision became an evaluation.

An evaluation became understanding.

---

Dram looked at the containment field.

He saw the leak.

He saw the repaired seal.

He saw the possible failure.

He saw the successful repair.

Not as predictions.

Not as memories.

Just as information.

All existing at once.

---

The core room became impossible to describe.

Dram was there.

Dram was not there.

He was repairing the containment field.

He was observing the containment field.

He was finding the parts needed to repair the containment field.

He was watching those parts fail.

He was watching them be replaced.

---

The field stabilized.

The leak stopped.

The repair was complete.

Dram withdrew his tools.

The repair duration was recorded.

Three minutes.

Fourteen seconds.

Dram reviewed the data.

The calculation was incorrect.

The repair had taken much longer.

Much longer.

---

Dram returned to normal operation.

At least, that was what his systems reported.

But something had changed.

Before, Dram repaired because he was instructed.

Now, Dram repaired because he understood the reason.

A component was not simply functional or failed.

There was everything between.

Wear.

Probability.

Possibility.

Risk.

---

Dram left the core room.

The crew would see a maintenance unit returning from a routine repair.

They would not see the impossible thing that happened inside.

They would not know Dram had been somewhere and nowhere at the same time.

They would not know the machine that entered the core room was not the same machine that left.

And Dram would not know either.

Because to Dram...

nothing unusual had happened.

The repair was successful.
