The Dramatica Box Anomaly Report: Chapter 1: The Promotion

Chapter 1: The Promotion

The reactor bay smelled faintly of ozone and catnip. The hum of the Quantum Core had settled into a rhythm that was almost musical — if you ignored the occasional spark that jumped from the containment ring like a nervous tic. Admiral Tarz stood at the podium, his uniform immaculate despite the green glow that made everyone look slightly radioactive.

The crew cats gathered in a semicircle, tails twitching, eyes reflecting the core’s pulse. Bammer sat in his box, the cardboard throne of chaos, licking one paw with the calm of someone who had already accepted his destiny.“By unanimous vote,” Tarz began, voice echoing through the bay, “Bammer is promoted.”A murmur rippled through the crew.
“Promoted to what?” asked a tabby crouched near the coolant pipes.
Tarz adjusted his collar. “Chief Repair Tester.”Bammer blinked. “I push button?”
“Exactly,” Tarz said. The silence that followed was heavy enough to bend gravity. One of the engineers whispered, “Wait… that’s the job where you see if things explode.”
Tarz didn’t flinch. “He’s uniquely qualified.”Bammer’s tail flicked once. “I fix things. Sometimes.”The crew exchanged looks — the kind that said we’re all doomed but at least it’ll be entertaining. Tarz gestured toward the console, its surface still scarred from the last “repair.”
“Your first assignment, Chief Tester: verify the stability of the catnip core.”Bammer padded forward, box dragging behind him like a cape.

The console hissed. A single red button pulsed in rhythm with the reactor’s heartbeat.
He raised a paw.
“Should we stop him?” whispered a crew cat.
Tarz sighed. “That’s his job now.”Click.The reactor flared green, bathing the bay in light so bright it erased shadows. The hum deepened, then steadied. Monitors flickered from red to amber to calm blue. Tarz leaned in, reading the data.
“Output… stabilizing?”The crew erupted in cautious cheers.
“He fixed it!”
Tarz exhaled. “By accident.”Bammer turned, eyes glowing faintly in the reactor light. “Promotion good.”Tarz stared at him for a long moment, then muttered, “We’ve created a system that rewards catastrophe.”The hum of the catnip core filled the silence again — steady, hypnotic, and just a little too smug.
